Bitumen joint tape for joints to rails
Bitumen joint tapes generally offer many advantages. The self-adhesive products, in particular, can be laid quickly and economically. After installing the joint tapes and after the subsequent installation and cooling of the asphalt, the traffic surface can be used immediately. No further work is needed, and nor is a second shutting off of the area necessary, such as is generally required for subsequent cutting and pouring. Since the introduction of ZTV Fug-StB 01 (Zusätzliche Technische Vertragsbedingungen und Richtlinien für Fugen in Verkehrsflächen - German Additional Technical Contractual Conditions and Directives for Joints in Traffic Surfaces) only high-quality, tested bitumen joint tapes can be used for joints to rails, which will surely result in a better quality of application leading to an improvement in the result as a whole. DEKOTEC Leverkusen, Germany, has developed the bitumen joint tape TOK®-Band T for special uses on rails and in other areas of high demand. The tape has excellent adhesive and elastic qualities even at extremely low temperatures and meets the requirements of TL bitFug 82. This bitumen joint tape has also been tested according to the requirements for rail joint compounds set out in TL/TP Fug-StB 01 (Technische Lieferbedingungen/Prüfvorschriften für Fugenfüllstoffe in Verkehrsflächen, Technical Terms of Delivery/Test Provisions for Filler Materials in Traffic Surfaces). The excellent application qualities and the high-quality material have proved themselves over many years of use. The joint tape is available in a fusible and a self-adhesive version. The fusible product is fused with a gas flame after application and drying of the primer and fastened to the rail. The self-adhesive bitumen tape needs no fusing and can be applied directly once the primer is dry. Joint tapes on rails are laid by experienced workers to above the rail head and then peeled off with a hot shovel until flush with the upper edge of the rail. This guarantees that the upper edge of the joint tape is at exactly the right height even if the underlying surface is slightly uneven.
